Eddy Howard Smith - 1979 Charcoal Gesture Drawing

My brother Eddy Howard Smith drew approximately 400-500 drawing between 1979 and 1980. He changed to photography in 1980 until his death in 1982 at the age of 36. The majority of his photography has been destroyed but around 350 of his drawings remain with the family.

I will periodically post his drawings to show his amazing talent.

Gary Smith
I get the impression the figures are laughing. I'm just saying.

The gesture figure is gorgeous and to be honest the movement of the lines creates the flowing, dance like gesture. It's beautiful simple, and well defined. I think the world needs to see more gestures like these.

I'm really glad you enjoy this drawing. My brother did several dozen practice gesture, such as this one. He also did several more detailed gesture drawing that you can find throughout his gallery. I believe he practiced this style of drawing to learn how to put motion into his drawings.

Thank you for your comments.

Love gestural drawing that flow from both the understanding of the subjects and understanding the medium... this one is a lesson, it captures the movement and feeling of the figures. It is so cleanly and simply executed by moving from the end to the side of the charcoal... so impressive... love what ~chesya says too

I like this more than Matisse's dancers. He went for the minimum of technique, your brother adds a higher degree of sophistication using the meta-forms of fire and wind. I am suddenly reminded of the mistral.

I am also put in mind of Chauvet, there are only animals depicted there, but then the humans here are also animals in all their glory.
