Eddy Howard Smith - 1980 Charcoal Drawing

My brother Eddy Howard Smith drew approximately 400-500 drawing between 1979 and 1980. He changed to photography in 1980 until his death in 1982 at the age of 36. The majority of his photography has been destroyed but around 350 of his drawings remain with the family.

I will periodically post his drawings to show his amazing talent.

What I first like about this picture is the interesting use of graphite. Tough he colouring is quite rough, you look at a very detailed picture, which shading- and lighteffects have a great effects when viewing. Especially at crucial parts, like the eyes or nose and mouth you can see the experienced and confident use of the graphite, which really isn't easy to work with at all.
Especially the eyes seem to be filled with life, also because of the amazing highlighteffects there.
What I also like about the picture is the very strong contrast, which really catches the eye when first looking at the picture, as you can see at the lips or the contrast of the right half of the face and the hair on this side.
Now to the pose: I think the idea of coverng half of the womans face behind her hair is very good and original, giving the picture a wild athomsphere an the one hand, but a very thoughtful and serious, too, caused of the facial expression of the woman, whith whicg the artist created one more interesting contrast.

Finally there is to say, that the picture all in all has a very impressing impact, you really can see the artists skills.
(I'm sorry for any spelling- or grammarmistakes. English isn't my mothertounge, I'm still learning)
